As we celebrate another Earth Day (April 22, 2020), we’re acknowledging that this Earth Day celebration comes during a unique time. As a majority of the planet stays at home to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, it seems that the earth is hitting a reset button. One – anonymous – quote we recently heard resonates with us: “The planet, like an angry parent, sent us to our rooms to think about what we’ve done.”

And amidst all the trials and tribulations of the past many weeks, some positive stories have also emerged. Everyday folks are helping to feed their community. Frontline hospital teams are working tirelessly to save lives. And there’s a new appreciation for folks that were under-appreciated before. People like servers and cooks and sanitation workers and delivery men and women… And let’s not forget John Krasinski’s Some Good News!

But one other positive has emerged as everyone stays home, pollution levels have dropped significantly. Major European cities have seen a reduction of as much as 50 percent, and the northeast U.S. over 30 percent. In India, they are enjoying crisp blue skies and their lowest pollution levels in years. Their capital city, New Delhi, had previously registered pollution levels 8-20 times higher than what is deemed dangerous.

Our little blue planet is taking a deep breath this Earth Day. We hope this will remind governments, businesses, and everyday citizens to think about and implement, solutions to take care of our environment. With that in mind, we compiled a list of actionable things you can do to build your own ripple and limit your carbon footprint. We’ve also included the estimated amount of CO2 reduction, as estimated by scientists at Project Drawdown (and you can see the full list on their website).

Composting

According to Project Drawdown, in a landfill, biodegradable waste (fruits, veggies, leaves, grass, etc.), lacking the presence of oxygen, produces methane gas as it decomposes. Methane is 34 times more powerful (and bad for the climate) than carbon dioxide. Better yet, organic material is converted into stable soil carbon, which sequesters carbon and makes an excellent fertilizer. It is estimated that composting all of our biodegradable waste would eliminate two-three gigatons of CO2. Why not start composting with these tips from Good Housekeeping?

Eating Habits: Add More Plants to Your Diet/Reduce Food Waste

Another easy to implement, at-home solution (and one of the biggest personal impacts we can make) is to simply eat more plants. In fact, if the entire world adopted a vegetarian diet, we could reduce “business as usual” carbon emissions by 63 percent, reducing and sequestering between 65-91 gigatons of CO2 over the next 30 years.

Additionally, buy what you need and eat what you buy. As a planet, we waste one-third of the food we raise and prepare. And this food ends up in the landfill and will generate roughly 90 gigatons of CO2 over the next thirty years. And according to Project Drawdown, “the food we waste is responsible for eight percent of global emissions.”

Recycling Paper

Did you know that paper can be recycled and reused five to seven times? Instead of using paper once and sending it to the landfill, and thus increasing the immediate need for more timber to make new paper, recycle it. If the world recycled just 75 percent of paper, estimates are that 1.1-1.95 gigatons of CO2 would be eliminated or sequestered over the next 30 years.

Around the House and Office

For those of you inspired to take it even a step further, there are a multitude of opportunities for home improvement projects that enable you to do your part to make the Earth happy!

For starters, you can follow our lead and install low-flow faucets, toilets, and showers in your home. Water has to be cleaned and heated, and then treated when it comes back as wastewater. This consumes energy and that contributes to climate change. Low-flow technologies can decrease water consumption by 45 percent. That alone could collectively eliminate an entire gigaton of CO2 over the next 30 years. At the very least, you get to do your part and save some money on your water bill!

Another easy way to help save both money and the planet is through the installation of a smart thermostat. It uses algorithms and sensors to “memorize your routines” and nudge users toward more efficient behavior.”

And if you’re feeling really ambitious and planning a remodel or a new home or office build, consider making it net-zero. Using a combination of daylighting, maximum insulation, electrochromic glass, solar panels, and advanced heating and cooling systems, it is indeed possible to have a building that is self-supporting. In Ad Victoriam’s home state of Georgia, we are happy to recommend Imery Construction Group, a fellow certified B Corp and expert at net-zero building and remodels.

Your Next Car: Points to Ponder

Here’s your fun fact of the day. There are now over one million electric vehicles on the road today.

A move to all-electric cars would save us 12-15 gigatons of CO2 over the next 30 years, whereas a move to hybrid vehicles would save us 4.5-7.5 gigatons.

So either way, consider a switch the next time you shop for a new car.

We hope you found this article useful and informative. And most of all, we hope it challenged you to rethink old habits. There is no problem too large to solve. Don’t sit on the sideline with your head in your hands. Don’t lament about the size and scope of the climate change challenge. Instead, understand you can help by playing your part. Start building your ripple of change now. And what else do you have to do this weekend that’s better than starting a compost pile and watching it rot, sustainably?

With all of the change in the air right now, from the Global Climate Strike to the Business Roundtable’s commitment to a new Statement of Purpose for corporations, the priority of the stakeholder over the shareholder has never been greater. At this year’s Champions Retreat in Los Angeles, the annual gathering of North American B Corps, over 700 attendees channeled the energy of the times to build on this momentum.

The Daily Agenda

For Ad Victoriam, the conference started on Monday, September 16, with the B Local Summit.

AdVic’s Director of Culture and the Chair of B Local Georgia, Nathan Stuck, spent the day with B Local leaders and community organizers from across the country. They shared strategies to build local organizations and the B Corp movement as a whole. From the more established chapters like Portland to the newer chapters like B Corp Local in Georgia, discussions centered on synergies and opportunities for collaboration.

After an incredible opening reception on Monday evening, the conference kicked into full swing on Tuesday. With a focus on building a regenerative and inclusive economy, attendees heard from Patagonia CEO Rose Marcurio, who spoke on the need for B Corps, and businesses in general, to lead by example and not accept “business as usual.” Breakout sessions focused on networking and creating a more inclusive economy, one that works for everyone.

On Wednesday morning, Ad Victoriam’s Stuck was elated to be called on stage to receive a Collective Action award with other B Local leaders from across the country. The award recognizes significant efforts to lead the movement, raise awareness, and promote growth.

B Local Leaders celebrating their Collective Action award on the main stage.

Later on Wednesday, attendees were treated to an incredible session with Bart Houlahan, co-founder of B Lab, and Deval Patrick, former governor of Massachusetts and the newest B Lab board member. There was also an incredible breakout session focused on recertification, which AdVic will have to start working on in mid-2020.

Bart Houlahan and Deval Patrick.

Making the Pledge

AdVic’s proudest moment of the Champions Retreat was taking the Pledge to Build the B Economy from Within. With this signature, we pledged to:

– Support the B Corp community
– Speed up the building of an inclusive and sustainable economy
– Truly use business as a force for good
– Share knowledge with our fellow B Corps
– Align our purchases with our values
– Consider B Corps first when making decisions
– Promoting B Corps to our employees and networks

Ad Victoriam’s Nathan Stuck signing the pledge.

This trek to Los Angeles was an intense three days of meeting some of the most inspiring people. These people are being the change they want to see in the world. We can hardly wait until 2020’s Champions Retreat!

But until then, we are committed to advancing to the next level. We’re striving to ensure that purpose is intertwined with profit and businesses to serve both our employees and communities.

About B Corp
B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

The Ad Victoriam team has bags packed and is ready to represent at this year’s BCorp Champions Retreat 2019 in Hollywood.

2018 was AdVic’s first year as a certified B Corp, and we jumped in feet first attending both the B Summit and the Champions Retreat. So after last year’s awesome experiences, you can understand why we’re excited to be heading to the City of Angels for this September 16-18 event to connect with other B Corps and people united in using business as a force for good.

At this year’s Champions Retreat, AdVic’s own Nathan Stuck, Chairman of B Local Georgia, has been invited to attend the B Local Summit session on September 16.

Remarks Stuck, “I can’t wait to learn how to grow a local community of businesses that believe in purpose and profit.”

B Local Georgia at their inaugural meeting in 2018, shortly after returning from Champions Retreat.

2019 Champions Retreat Theme

As leaders in the Corporate Social Responsibility movement, B Corps around the globe are taking the lead on building a more inclusive economy for everyone. This year’s Champions Retreat theme centers around Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives. Ad Victoriam successfully completed the 2019 Inclusive Economy Challenge and will look for further inspiration from their fellow attendees.

Stuck adds, “As BCorps we are always eager to learn from others, especially those that have accomplished lofty EDI goals. In addition to being a responsible way to do business, research shows that diverse teams make better decisions.”

Reasons to Be Excited

The last 18 months have been a fascinating whirlwind for AdVic and our commitment to the BCorp community. We’ve made B Corp friends across the country, especially since last year’s Champions Retreat. This year’s conference gives us a chance to finally meet these fellow BCorp members face to face. So many conference calls – B2B B Corp and B Culture – and now we get to talk in person!

AdVic’s Stuck sums it all up: “Reuniting with friends we’ve met in person or only known virtually, growing B Corp awareness in our home state of Georgia, and building a more diverse, and better, company all await us out west.”

In the first two blogs of this series, we made the case for why companies should consider becoming B Corp certified and the best practices for tackling the B Impact Assessment. This final article will help you with the next step on your journey. We will help you figure out what to do next and how to maximize your certification.

Once you’ve passed your audit and signed the Declaration of Interdependence, take some time to pat yourself and your team on the back. As every B Corp knows, this process isn’t easy. But you are now among a committed group of almost 3,000 companies around the world who believe in using business as a force for good. That is worth celebrating and shouting from the mountaintop.

But once the champagne is empty and your victory lap complete, you’ll have the same thought many of us had after we finished the certification process: Now What? That’s right, it’s time to figure out what to do next. Here are the easiest ways to get your employees and yourself involved:

Activate Your B Hive Account

Once certified, your company will have access to the B Hive, an online community of B corps. There, you can join channels and jump into all kinds of conversations, from B2B Networking to Community Offers, B Hive offers new B Corps a great chance to start meeting others in the community. It is here you will find out about great calls, like the B2B business development call and the B Culture call where thought leaders get together to solve commonly encountered problems. Put rather simply: Sign up, log in, and start posting.

Join Your B Local

Find your nearest B Local and get involved. Sign up for a committee, attend the networking events and get to know your fellow B Corps. These events are great for business development, idea sharing, and collaborations. B Locals also host annual Leadership Development Conferences (BLDs) that are worth the price of admission.

Read to the bottom and then sign up for our complimentary webinar that will review everything you need to know about becoming a B Corp.

Attend the Champions Retreat and/or the B Summit

At Ad Victoriam, we were so eager to get involved after our certification in January 2018 that we attended both the B Summit in Amsterdam and the Champions Retreat in New Orleans. We didn’t know what to do next and there wasn’t (yet) a B Local in Georgia. We left Amsterdam in awe of the companies and people we met, the convictions they felt for their purpose, and their dedication to improvement. New Orleans was more of the same. Even more companies doing great things that left us inspired to increase our mission and accomplish even more in 2019.

Whatever You Do, “Just Get Involved”

When Ad Victoriam first got certified, we asked B Corp champion, ArcBenders Founder Christina Noel, what to do next. Her response was simple, “Just get involved any way you can and you will figure it out from there.” So my advice is her advice. Be active on B Hive, plug into your B Local, attend the Champions Retreat and even the B Summit. Network, volunteer and sign up for the different calls. Get involved and you will find your own answer to what’s next.

Looking for some ideas on how to get involved? Check this out.

It’s 2019 and times have changed in the business world. More and more every day, becoming the gold standard of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is taking on a bigger role in C-Suite conversations.

No longer does the economic philosophy of Milton Friedman, to serve fiscal shareholders above all else, dominate the landscape. Customers and employees are demanding that the corporate world serve all stakeholders, including their employees, communities, and the environment. The number of companies listening is increasing. They have begun incorporating CSR initiatives into their day-to-day business operations. But with everyone doing it, how can you make your company stand out and work towards becoming a “gold standard of CSR?”

The answer is simple, join Ad Victoriam Solutions, a Georgia-based Salesforce Consultant, and have your company certified as a B Corp.

B Corps are for-profit businesses that have a proven (and certified) commitment to serving all stakeholders. They use business as a force for good, ensuring fair pay and benefits to a diverse and inclusive workforce. They also promise to be good stewards of the environment. That means they are actively serving in their communities, and believing purpose and profit can harmoniously coexist.

However, the process isn’t easy, but as the saying goes, if it was then everyone would be doing it. But it is worth going after. In the first of our three-part series, we’re focusing on five reasons your business should consider B Corp certification.

1. The Gold Standard of CSR: A True Differentiator

In a workforce and consumer base increasingly dominated by millennials, people are demanding more than just profit from the companies they buy from and work for. Consumers and potential employees are more likely to sniff out blatant “greenwashing.” Defined by Investopedia, “greenwashing” is “an attempt to capitalize on the growing demand for products that are environmentally sound.” Meaning “they are more natural, healthier, free of chemicals, recyclable, or less wasteful of natural resources.”

But with B Corps, the research and investigation into the legitimacy of a company’s claims have already been performed. After the company completes the B Impact Assessment (BIA), on which a company must score 80 out of a possible 200 points, B Lab, the nonprofit accreditation body that certifies B Corps, performs an audit of a company. The handbook and its policies are reviewed, numbers are verified, and many times, an on-site audit is performed. Succinctly put, B Corp certification is to for-profit business as Fair-Trade is to coffee or certified organic is to milk. The B logo is seen as a stamp of legitimacy on your CSR efforts.

2. Raising Capital

An often overlooked feature of B Corp certification is the ability to seek out investments in your business. According to Forbes, “The Global Impact Investing Network’s most recent estimate for the minimum size of the impact investment market doubled to $228 billion in assets under management, up from $114 billion in 2017.” More and more investors are looking to diversify their portfolios beyond industry. They want to include companies with environmental and social goals, following global standards like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

As investors scramble to find investment opportunities that align with their personal values, “B Corps may attract capital better than non-b-businesses,” according to an article in Fast Company. In the article, Abi Barnes, the author of “An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Going B,” published by the Yale Center for Business and the Environment, alluded to the B Corps’ ability to differentiate themselves to attract these investments. He stated that “in an era of ‘greenwashing’ and misleading labels, certified B Corporations and benefit corporations help consumers identify trustworthy companies.”

Read to the bottom and then sign up for our complimentary webinar that will review everything you need to know about becoming a B Corp.

3. Mission Lock

One of the biggest benefits of B Corp certification for a growing company is the ability to lock in your mission. When Ad Victoriam Solutions went through the assessment, we only had eight employees. We had to implement a lot of new policies and practices. More importantly, we had to envision what we wanted our company to look like as it grew. Fast forward three years and we have almost 70 employees and our vision is our reality. The mission and purpose are now baked into the DNA of our organization.

When we make strategic decisions, our status as a B Corp influences our direction. Whether it is how we recruit employees to ensure a diverse candidate pool or deciding on whether we want to take on a new client based on their mission and values, our certification weighs heavily on everything we do. And knowing that B Lab requires member companies to re-certify every three years ensures we are always thinking of a decision’s impact on everyone.

The truth is, not just focusing on the bottom line has been good for business. Since Ad Victoriam started the process three years ago, we have doubled our revenue every year.

4. Best Practices, Industry Standards, and Benchmarks for Improvement

An unexpected byproduct of B Corp certification is the inspiration from the B Community to always strive for more. There will always be another B Corp doing more than you for their employees, the environment, and their community. Allowing these companies to inspire you to deepen your commitment opens the door to becoming an even better corporate citizen. Being open to measuring your company’s performance to that of others allows you to identify areas for improvement.

In an interview with Forbes, Barnana CEO Nik Ingersöll stated, “Being a B Corp has solidified our commitment to the way we run our business. They also have an amazing framework that has given us more ideas on how to become even more sustainable. It has given me a path to constant and continued improvement.”

And in an article from the Harvard Business Review, “It Pays to Become a B Corporation,” Richard Stammer, VP of B Corp Cabot Creamery, highlights the use of benchmarking to achieve operational cost savings as well as to recruit and retain employees. Stammer also points to Patagonia, who “report[ed] that certification helps promote and validate its employee-centric culture, which attracts great candidates because of the company’s reputation as a great place to work. Since becoming a B Corp, Patagonia expanded the medical, military, and paid maternity and paternity leave for regular full- and part-time U.S. employees.”

5. Walk the Walk

On top of everything, you are signaling to the marketplace that your mission is sincere and genuine. It helps potential customers and employees more easily sift through the noise and find companies that truly believe in CSR.

B Corp Certification isn’t a pledge or a commitment to simply do better. It is the etching of your mission and your beliefs in stone. As such, it requires time and commitment to achieving. But in the end, it is worth it.

In Part 2 of this series, we focus on tackling the BIA and getting your company B Corp certified. We’ll share common hurdles, best practices, and aids to get help get you there!

A Salesforce user since 2010, The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens, Inc. (IHNA), an affiliate of Family Promise, is a non-profit organization with 1,000 volunteers. Their sole purpose is to provide immediate shelter and guidance to homeless families with children, due to misfortunes in their lives.

The problem IHNA was having was that they were not using Salesforce to its full potential. Their staff and volunteers just don’t have a deep understanding and practical usage of the software. They needed help to work smarter to devote more time to better serve their ever-growing community initiatives.

And while a group of UGA students was helping IHNA with occasional Salesforce tweaks, they, too, realized they needed help. It was then that the UGA team reached out to Ad Victoriam Solutions (AdVic). As a proud member of the B Corp Community, AdVic jumped into action to offer pro bono assistance.

The Challenge

Specifically, IHNA needed help implementing various Salesforce Sales Cloud enhancements they were not using. Enhancements needed to include the use of dashboards showing how they were trending with their volunteer and donor initiatives. Being a non-profit with limited resources, they were looking for a solution to get away from hand-written thank you notes to donors. For one recent 300-person fund-raising event, volunteers spent 10 hours a week for two weeks crafting hand-written notes.

The AdVic Non-Profit Resolution

Here’s how AdVic put in place an optimization strategy to solve IHNA’s current and future issues:

Data Integrity

Improvements to fields/objects to help normalize/standardize data.

Thank You Letters

Used S-doc from App Exchange to automate the creation of two types of Thank You letters to donors.

Trained IHNA staff/volunteers on how to modify templates. Now they can modify and keep using the two free Salesforce templates and never have to pay for the app.

Each thank you letter now takes seconds versus the manual letter creation process of the past. And, volunteers with this task have the bandwidth to take on new volunteer tasks.

Volunteer Dashboard

Designed custom dashboards to highlight volunteer leaderboards focused on congregations and households.

Donations Dashboard

Created custom donation reports/dashboards to support mailings. Now all relevant data can be exported and sent to a printer for mailings.

Created leaderboards for congregations, households, and Board Member donations history.

Financial Reports/Board Reports

Created a system for generating quarterly financial reports for Board meetings.

Moved IHNA out of age-old spreadsheet usage and into Salesforce report.

Normalized reporting, historical and current, so IHNA would never have to manually create those reports again resulting in more time saved.

Salesforce Implementation Postscript

Davin Welter, IHNA Executive Director, called out AdVic consultants for their work on this project. “We are very grateful to our project team, which held weekly meetings with us. They were organized, tracked the project with us the whole way, and were very responsive to us. If we had a question at a morning meeting, they would get back to us with the solution that afternoon.”

The AdVic project team was specifically chosen because of their non-profit background. From the onset, they understood IHNA’s challenges and the stressors of being a small organization with limited Salesforce knowledge. Welter added, “They communicated in a way we could understand and appreciate.”

Diversity and inclusion can vary by industry. For example, positions within certain industries, such as healthcare, are primarily held by women, whereas, technology positions are occupied largely by men. In fact, 76% of the technology jobs are held by men, with 95% of the team being Caucasian.

According to an article published in the Harvard Business Review, states that “non-homogenous teams are simply smarter.” And noted that, a study published in Innovation: Management, Policy & Practice, found “that companies with more women were more likely to introduce radical new innovations into the market over a two-year period.” In addition to the evidence that diversity and inclusion are good business practices, we believe it is also a good people practice. Here are some of the lessons we’ve learned and solutions we’ve implemented.

Effectively Targeting Diversity in our Recruitment Strategy

In 2018, we started recruiting at the University of Georgia for our new Elevate program, an entry-level program that hires and trains recent graduates on Salesforce Consulting. In our first outreach, we received resumes primarily from Caucasian males. As a result, we wondered how we could increase the diversity of our candidates.

As a result, we evaluated and modified our job descriptions to increase the likelihood of attracting diverse candidates. We were happy to receive more than 50 resumes from individuals with diverse backgrounds. Our modifications drew in 4 times as many women and 2 times as many underrepresented minorities.

Changing the Future of Diversity & Inclusion

People often say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. Our efforts to recruit and hire a diverse workforce are constrained by the number of diverse candidates. In an effort to work toward a long-term solution, we are building relationships with organizations who support inclusivity.

Recently, our team spoke to the UGA Women in Technology Chapter about navigating a career in the tech industry, balancing work and family, and breaking down organizational biases they may encounter. We are in the planning stage to hold similar events on campuses across the Southeast.

Diversity isn’t a checkbox for AdVic. While worthwhile and valuable as a KPI, it needs to be more, and mean more. Diversity attempts often fail. They failed because they focus only on diversity while forgetting inclusion. Respecting each other, listening to ideas, including each other in conversations and decisions, that what is true inclusion.

Many of us don’t notice the world outside of our own. We often journey robotically through our daily routines; wake up, drop off the kids, go to work, dinner, activities, bed … repeat. The Ad Victoriam Solutions (AdVic) team stepped away from their daily routine of supporting our clients, to support our troops.

Our troops leave their spouses, children, friends and jobs to answer the call to something much bigger than themselves. The AdVic Georgia-based team assembled a large care package for our troops deployed overseas. The team purchased and shipped more than 75 pounds of essential goodies, such as razors, mouthwash, shampoo, and lotion and also some basic comforts of home, gum, candy, playing cards and beef jerky to the Georgia National Guard’s 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed abroad.

We chose this particular combat team to support our our CTO, Brian Mize, who currently serves as their Battalion Chaplain to their more than 14,000 soldiers. Mize helps soldiers adjust to life overseas, providing guidance and counseling to our brave men and women protecting our freedom and the freedom of the local people. We want Mize to know how much he is missed, and hope that sending Mize goods to distribute to his Battalion will help him accomplish his mission as Chaplain.

“We know Brian, and all of the troops, left behind loved ones and friends and the little comforts of home that we all take for granted. This is a small gesture, but we hope it brings a smile to their faces and reminds them how grateful we are. While we look forward to Brian’s safe return, we realize the importance of his current mission and are proud to call him our coworker, teammate and friend. And want to support him any way we can.”

If you or your company would like to organize a similar event to support our troops, contact us, we would be happy to help.

Working in the Salesforce ecosystem, you come across many inspiring stories. Meaghan Bookers’s story is one of them. Before stumbling across Salesforce, she spent 6 months living in India as a volunteer and the year after, she taught in an alternative school for at-risk students in Colorado. Take a moment to hear about how Meaghan’s journey to Salesforce and Ad Victoriam Solutions enabled her to combine career success with her passion for having an impact on the world.

When were you first introduced to Salesforce?

My first employer after teaching utilized Salesforce and I was asked to manage the platform – it was assigned to me after their admin left. It was a “learn under fire” experience. But, it was total luck, and good timing. I fell in love with the versatility of the platform and quickly wanted to dive deeper into the system. I became a sponge, soaking up as much as I could, and always wanting to learn more about how it worked.

What do you like most about the platform?

You can do so many different things with Salesforce and it is so user friendly. And, the biggest thing for me was the free training they provide through Trailhead. It has been incredibly helpful as I grow my skillset, while also developing and learning on the platform through consulting work.

Did Salesforce change your career trajectory?

Definitely! It opened the door to the tech world without me having a tech degree. I’ve pursued this career path because it’s been a really fun career. Solving problems and creating solutions that help companies is so rewarding and motivating for me. And because I am passionate (to the core) about giving back, I proudly drink the Salesforce 1-1-1 (1% equity donated, 1% volunteer time donated, 1% profits donated) Kool-Aid. Love the fact that they are so dedicated to having an impact.

What attracted you to Ad Victoriam Solutions?

Ad Victoriam is a B Corp and because I had previously worked for another B Corp and knew what they stand for, this became a major selling point. In addition, throughout the interview process, I met so many people who were kind, passionate and professional. They embodied my expectations. This made me want to be a part of what they were building.

Anything else you would like to share?

I am proud to be part of the B Corp movement and thrilled I can continue my new exciting career with a company that culturally fits me. B Corp is built by people who own companies and believe that it is important to make money, sure. But, it is also important to be a good person in this world. And the fact that they are willing to donate their talents and resources, and also support their employees while they volunteer, is incredible. I am so energized to re-engage with my local B Corp community and build the Ad Victoriam “B Brand” in the Rocky Mountain State.

Furthering our B Corp purpose-driven mission to be a force for good, Ad Victoriam joined other Certified B Corporations in New Orleans to further our purpose-driven mission to be a force for good and to accomplish three goals.

We’ve returned and hope the following wisdom we experienced inspires you to consider joining the movement to work toward a better world.

3 Valuable Purpose-Driven Takeaways

Growing B Corp in Georgia. While not all the Georgia B Corps attend the retreat, we connected with Tripp Pomeroy, President of Café Campesino. His company gives back to Central and South America communities where his sustainable coffee beans are grown. We also met Mike Mannina from Thrive Farmers, a sustainable coffee roaster in Georgia. As a result, we have grown our B Local group to six members, held our first meeting, and planned our second.

New B Corp Lessons. We embarked on this trip, in part, to meet many of the folks who have helped us along our journey and to expand our B Corp Network. Every breakfast table, breakout session, and happy hour was filled with folks willing to share their story. A session of charitable giving practices led by Givily CEO Amy Kauffman led to a revamping of our corporate mission and an updated charitable plan for 2019.

Another session on leadership and activities sparked a wealth of ideas on both employee empowerment and developing Ad Victoriam’s next generation of leadership. We talked about emotions in the workplace, the importance of providing a safe space for feedback and having “difficult” conversations. Implementing the best practices shared within our company will positively impact our team members and clients as we move forward.

Raising the B Corp Bar in 2019. After listening to Gareth Hedges of Redwoods Group, who walked us through their journey to successfully navigate the 2018 Inclusive Economy Challenge, we signed up for the challenge! He spoke of creative team events and exercises, training programs, an unrelenting focus on increasing charitable work. His talk inspired us. We are now up for the challenge!

Ad Victoriam is Ready to Do More Good

This was an incredible experience for us as a new B Corp. We pledge to do more this next year. Do more in our communities. Do more for our employees. Do more for our planet. We would be happy to speak with you about possibly becoming a Certified B Corporation, especially if you are located in the Atlanta area. If interested, please reach out to our Community Engagement Director, Nathan Stuck.
